Under sweltering heat and with a sizeable crowd in attendance at the Madrid circuit, the Supercars España opening qualifying session got underway—and things quickly heated up on Circuito de Madrid Jarama – RACE track as well.
Francisco Abreu was the first out of the pit lane, eager to set a competitive time early on. As soon as he completed his first flying lap, he jumped to the top of the timing screens.
However, during that same lap, the driver from Madeira made slight contact with another car, resulting in a puncture. The Toyota Gazoo Racing Caetano Portugal driver went off at Curva Farina, shortly after crossing the start/finish line, bringing his session to a premature end.
Despite the setback—and with some damage to his Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2, which also prevented teammate Francisco Mora from taking part in Qualifying 2 - Francisco Abreu managed to hold onto pole position for Race 1. His time was narrowly better than José Carlos Pires (Speedy Motorsport), who fell just 0.030s short in another Japanese machine.
Roberto Faria secured third in his Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 (Racar Motorsport), just two tenths off pole and a mere five-thousandths ahead of Nerea Martí, who put the BMW M4 GT4 (G82) of BMW España Motorsport in fourth.
In his rookie season, Nuno Afonso (Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 – Gianfranco Motorsport) was the fastest among GT4 Pro-Bronze drivers, ahead of three Mercedes-AMG GT4s driven by Jonathan Engström (CV Performance x JP Motorsport), Max Huber, and Guillermo Aso (both of NM Racing Team).
Miguel Lobo, another newcomer this weekend, delivered a solid debut in the category, finishing third in GT4 Pro-Bronze in his Batina Racing Toyota, just ahead of Vasco Oliveira. Oliveira, in an Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 EVO run by Racar Motorsport, was the top GT4 Bronze runner.
Javier Macias, who had already impressed on Friday in his BMW M4 GT4 (G82) for Promotion Motorsport, topped the GT4 Am class and will start 14th overall.
Just behind came the BMW M4 GT4 (F82) of Autoworks Motorsport. Representing the home team, Héctor Hernández secured GTX pole after a strong fight with young Alejandro Iribas, in a Ligier JS2R for Chefo Sport by Petrogold—the two separated by six tenths.
The Cup division saw an intense battle that had been brewing since Friday’s practice. Rui Miritta (Porsche 911 Cup – Monteiros Competições) narrowly beat Marcus Fothergill (Tockwith Motorsports), with less than a second between them.
Tomás Martins stood out among the Ginetta G40s of the FPAK Junior Team, topping the TC division battle ahead of teammates Tomás Gomes and Diogo Castro.
HOME HEROES DELIVER ‘MILAGROS’
Earlier in the day, the official BMW España Motorsport team had already shown strong pace, confirmed in Q1 by Nerea Martí’s fourth place. But José de los Milagros was on a mission—to take pole position in front of his home fans.
The Madrid native attacked the circuit and stopped the clocks at 1m37.194s, smashing last year’s record—set by Filip Vava (Mercedes-AMG GT4 – NM Racing Team)—by 0.584 seconds.
However, the session was interrupted after contact between Aubrey Hall and Rui Miritta under braking at Curva Fangio, causing a lengthy red flag delay and pushing the fight for pole into the closing minutes.
Several drivers returned to the track when the pit lane reopened, but none could match de los Milagros, who secured a coveted pole by over two-tenths of a second from Tomás Gomes, who delivered a strong lap in his Speedy Motorsport Toyota to claim second.
Behind them, another tight battle unfolded in the GT4 Pro-Bronze class between Gianfranco Motorsport and Batina Racing. In the end, Alexandre Areia edged out Orlando Batina by just 0.069s, with the result decided in the final moments.
Among GT4 Bronze competitors, Colombian debutant Andrés Prieto (Mercedes-AMG – NM Racing Team) outpaced the Aston Martin of Francisco Carvalho (Racar Motorsport) by half a second.
Towards the session’s end, Smörg ensured a perfect result for Promotion Motorsport, taking another pole in the BMW, to add to the one already secured by teammate Javier Macias in Q1.
In the GTX division, Borja Hormigos kept Autoworks Motorsport on top, taking another class pole ahead of Ángel Santos (Ligier – Chefo Sport by Petrogold), with the two running closely.
In the Cup category, this time it was Marcus Fothergill who got the better of Rui Miritta, continuing their tight duel with less than a second separating them once again.
However, Fothergill was penalized for crossing the solid white line at pit entry, losing his three best laps and being demoted to the back of the grid - promoting Miritta (Monteiros Competições) to the top spot in the Cup division.
Despite the penalty, a fierce battle between the two is expected in tomorrow’s races.
Among the young hopefuls of the FPAK Junior Team in the TC division, it was Martim Romão who came out on top, ahead of João Faria and Rodrigo Vilaça.
