The Circuito Ricardo Tormo hosted the free practice session this morning for the Supercars Endurance – a round counting towards both the Iberian Supercars and Supercars España championships – and once again the timesheets highlighted the extremely close competitiveness of the field: minimal gaps, many cars within the same second, and four different manufacturers filling the top four overall positions.
This was also the first session with all cars on track together, after yesterday’s test sessions were run separately by category. Behaviour on track was exemplary, allowing teams and drivers to fine-tune their strategies and setups ahead of this afternoon’s qualifying session.
César Machado and Adrián Ferrer were particularly competitive in GT4 Pro, topping the timesheets. The Speedy Motorsport Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 duo edged out Mathieu Martins and Roberto Faria (Racar Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4) and Francisco Mora and Francisco Abreu (Toyota Gazoo Racing Caetano Portugal). The top three were separated by just over three-tenths of a second, setting the stage for a fierce battle for pole position.
In GT4 Pro-Bronze, former GT4 Bronz driver Andrius Zemaitis and young talent Karel Staut delivered a consistent performance to claim the top spot for NokoTech Racing by Speedy and their Toyota. However, the pressure was relentless, with Portuguese duo Nuno Afonso and Alexandre Areia (Gianfranco Motorsport) just a few hundredths behind and Bruno Pires and Mark Kastelic (Lema Racing) completing the top three, keeping the division wide open heading into qualifying.
Local driver Manuel Bertolín once again stood out in GT4 Bronze, putting the GT Corse BMW M4 GT4 EVO at the top of the table. Vasco Oliveira and Francisco Carvalho (Racar Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 EVO) and Álvaro Lobera and Gonzalo de Andrés (McLaren Barcelona – SMC Motorsport McLaren Artura GT4) responded strongly, all finishing very close and reinforcing the notion that the podium in this category will be decided by the smallest of margins.
GT4 Am delivered thrilling action, with Smörg and Javier Macías taking the top spot in the Promotion Motorsport BMW M4 GT4 EVO. However, Pedro Bastos Rezende and Rúben Vaquinhas (Gianfranco Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4) were right on their heels, while newcomers Vicente Dasí and Josep Perera (PCR Sport Mercedes AMG GT4) showed impressive pace, proving they are ready to fight for the top positions.
In GTX, the Speedy Motorsport Porsche Cayman CS, driven by Pompeu Simões and Duarte Camelo, showed great form, staying just ahead of the competition. Henrique Moura Oliveira (Monteiros Competições BMW M4 GT4 (F82)) and the Iberian duo Pere Marques and Gabriel Caçoilo (Chefo Sport Petrogold Ligier JS2R) ensured a top three composed of three different teams.
Finally, in the Cup division, where Porsche 911 Cup cars dominate, Adam Fawsitt and Pedro Paiva Raposo (Protech Motorsport) set the benchmark time. Ángel Lanchares (LAN GP Racing), who is competing solo this weekend, and Vítor Costa (Monteiros Competições) remained close behind, ensuring that this class will also provide excitement right to the chequered flag.
With these indicators, everything points to a thrilling qualifying session filled with close battles on track, where every tenth of a second could change the grid line-up.
Qualifying takes place today from 13:50, with live coverage on the championship’s official Instagram, broadcasting directly from the pit lane.
On Sunday, the programme features two races, at 10:05 and 15:05, both lasting 50 minutes.
Live in Portugal and Spain: DAZN Portugal and DAZN Spain, plus the official competition social.
