Guillermo Aso has been one of the standout figures in Supercars Endurance for several seasons, with multiple victories to his name. This year, the Aragonese driver finds himself firmly in contention for both the GT4 Pro-Bronze titles in the Iberian Supercars and Supercars España. However, he’s quick to point out that there’s still a long road ahead before the titles are decided at Estoril season-finale.

The Spaniard shares the #36 Mercedes-AMG GT4 entry with Silver-rated driver Filip Vava. The NM Racing Team pair opened their campaign with a win in the Algarve, followed by another victory at Jarama – although the latter counted exclusively towards the Spanish series.

With rounds in Valencia, Jerez, and Estoril still to come, Aso and Vava head into the second half of the season right in the thick of the class title battle. They currently lead the Iberian Supercars GT4 Pro-Bronze division drivers’ standings – albeit tied on points with Nuno Afonso and Alexandre Areia (Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2, Gianfranco Motorsport) – and also top the Supercars España leaderboard.

So far, it’s been a clearly positive campaign, with Aso praising the level of consistency and competitiveness throughout the field.

“We’re very happy with how the season has started, as we’re leading the GT4 Pro-Bronze standings – tied in the Iberian Supercars and outright in Supercars España. The level of competition has been incredibly tight, and I genuinely believe that anything can happen right up to the final race. We’re confident we can stay in front, but it will all depend on how the rest of the season unfolds,” said the Zaragoza-native driver.

With two of the remaining three events set to take place on Spanish soil – Valencia and Jerez – the question of home advantage naturally comes up. While Aso acknowledges a degree of familiarity with those circuits, he downplays any significant edge it might provide.

“In the upcoming rounds – Valencia first, then Jerez, both in Spain – we may have a bit more track knowledge as Spanish drivers, but for example, Filip had never raced at Jarama before and quickly adapted, even taking pole position. Personally, I’ve raced at Estoril and Portimão many times – Estoril is actually one of my favourite tracks and I always go well there. So I don’t think there’s a huge difference between the Spanish and Portuguese circuits in terms of familiarity. Of course, racing at home is always nice, but I don’t think it’s decisive,” he said.

Consistency, Aso believes, will be the defining factor in the title fight. In that context, he was clear about what he sees as the biggest challenge ahead: “Without a doubt, the key in the second half of the season will be avoiding any non-scores or mistakes that cost us points. The aim is to maximise every opportunity – ideally finishing on the podium each time”.

The next round for Iberian Supercars and Supercars España takes place in Valencia in September, a venue well-known to the Catalonia team and one where the Mercedes-AMG GT4 pairing are expecting to be competitive.

“It’s definitely a circuit we like – a strong layout that suits both us and the car. We already saw that last year,” Aso concluded, confidently.

With wins already on the board and a competitive pace demonstrated early in the season, Guillermo Aso and Filip Vava approach the business end of the championship with ambition, realism, and focus. With the standings finely balanced, the run-in looks set to be fiercely contested, where mistakes could prove costly and every podium finish could tip the scales. While Aso is not shouting from the rooftops, his confidence – though measured – is unmistakable.
